Sustainable Events Guide

Designing sustainable events can be both easy and meaningful — it just takes a little extra planning. That is why the Office of Sustainability has developed a new Sustainable Events Guide to help our community host successful and sustainable events. The guidance in this document will help you move towards events that reflect the Georgetown value of Care for Our Common Home. No matter the size of your event, there are always opportunities to reduce waste, purchase products that support a sustainable economy, and support the environment, all while breaking even or saving funding and resources.

Reduce Food Waste

If you think you might have extra food from an event, there are a few different ways you donate leftover food so it doesn’t go to waste.

  • Food Recovery Network – The Food Recovery Network now accepts event pick-up orders. Use this form to request a pick-up at least a week in advance of your event. The FRN donates unopened food to individuals struggling with food insecurity. The FRN can accept any unopened, unserved, or leftover food items that remain in the catering space. Please email Georgetownfrn@gmail.com if you have any questions or need further assistance.
  • Hoya Hub – Donate leftover non-perishable food to Georgetown University’s food pantry, the Hoya Hub, located on the 4th floor of the Leavey Center (room 418). Hoya Hub food pantry accepts a variety of common non-perishable food and personal hygiene products (examples include canned goods, peanut butter and jelly, cereal, grains, pasta, mashed potatoes, fruit cups, and tuna fish). See a list of items most needed by Hoya Hub here, and to confirm whether your donation can be accepted by the food pantry, email hoyahub@georgetown.edu.
  • Advertise surplus perishable food on the Georgetown “Free Food on Campus” Groupme.

Composting and Recycling Bin Request

  • Compost Bin Request (new window)
    • To start the reservation process for a compost bin, please fill out the linked form above at least two weeks prior to your event.
  • Recycling Bin Request
    • To request a recycling bin, please submit a work order request at least two weeks prior to your event.
