GU Wins Car Free Day Campus Challenge for 3rd Year in a Row

For the third year in a row, Georgetown University has won the annual Metro DC Car Free Day College Campus Challenge, with nearly three-quarters of all region-wide university pledges coming from Georgetown. In the lead-up to International Car Free Day on September 22, more than 1,500 Hoyas made a pledge to go car-free or car-lite by for the day, almost doubling last year’s participation. 

Of the students, faculty and staff who took the pledge, 43% traded in their car for walking, 32% for public transit, and 20% for a bike. In total, 78% of Georgetown participants opted to use one of the above modes of transportation as opposed to their car to travel to campus.

Winning this competition exemplifies our University community’s dedication to sustainability, underscoring how the small daily actions of our community members add up to make a positive impact. Georgetown and the Office of Sustainability commend all those who took the pledge and hope that you will continue to try alternative forms of transportation for your daily commute.
